About Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee

Haridwar district is known mostly for the slow-moving Ganga, busy pilgrim ghats, and the steep Shivalik hills rising in the background. But just a short drive from the temples of Haridwar lies Roorkee, an old canal town where engineering has been a way of life since the mid-19th century. This is where you find the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee. My days here are marked by the contrast of historic brick archways and high-performance computing centers, giving the place a distinct identity that feels very different from newer, glass-and-steel engineering schools.

How to Apply

Admissions rely entirely on national-level entrance examinations, leading to a highly competitive cutoff list published online. For undergraduate entries, the institute evaluates JEE Advanced ranks through the JoSAA counseling portal, where the opening and closing ranks for each engineering branch are updated across multiple allotment rounds.

To secure your seat after the cutoff match, you must upload your verified academic credentials and pay the initial seat-acceptance fee directly on the central allocation portal. Following online clearance, final physical registration at the Roorkee campus requires original document verification at the Senate Hall before classes commence.

Campus & Infrastructure

Facility	Description
Cafeteria / Canteen	Multiple eateries operate across the campus, including the central student-run Amul parlor and the late-night food stalls near Rajendra Bhawan, which serve hot meals during exam weeks.
Placement Cell / Career Guidance	The Career Development Cell coordinates the annual placement drives, managing peer-led mock interviews and technical preparation sessions designed for major core engineering and software development firms.
Library	The Mahatma Gandhi Central Library holds over three lakh volumes, featuring a fully computerized access system and a rare archives section with original civil engineering documents from the nineteenth century.
Computer Center / Wi-Fi Campus	Supported by the Param Ganga supercomputing facility, the high-speed campus intranet provides continuous wireless coverage to all classrooms, laboratories, and residential wings.
Sports / Playground	Students train at the historic LBS Stadium and the UG Club, which feature synthetic athletic tracks, outdoor cricket grounds, and an Olympic-size swimming pool.
Hostels	Accommodation is arranged in self-contained units like Cautley and Sarojini Bhawan, each providing independent dining halls, recreation rooms, and open inner courtyards.

Bottom line: This institute is not the right fit if you prefer a bustling metropolitan setting over a quiet, self-contained canal town. Before applying, ensure you have the self-discipline to handle a highly rigorous academic structure that expects independent lab research from the very first semester.
