New NCERT Class 9 Social Science Textbook Brings Income Tax and Entrepreneurship into Classrooms

Class 9 students across CBSE schools will soon open a Social Science textbook that feels closer to everyday life. NCERT’s Understanding Society: India and Beyond, Part 2, released in late September 2026, moves beyond pure theory. It brings income tax calculations, personal money management and the journey of Indian businesses straight into the classroom. The book forms part of the wider shift under the National Education Policy. History, geography, political science and economics now sit together in one integrated volume. Part 1 came out earlier in the year. Part 2 completes the set with chapters that connect governance, money and enterprise. One chapter on governance links traditional Indian symbols to modern public life. It discusses the Sengol, the national motto Satyamev Jayate drawn from the Mundaka Upanishad, and the Supreme Court’s motto. The idea is simple. Students see how old ideas of fairness and responsibility still shape institutions today. Financial literacy takes centre stage in the chapter Managing Your Personal Finances. For the first time at this level, Class 9 learners meet the new tax regime. The text walks them through tax slabs with clear worked examples. Paying tax appears not as a burden but as a civic duty that funds schools, roads and health schemes. Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY is used to show how insurance protects families from sudden medical costs. Entrepreneurship arrives through concrete stories rather than abstract advice. The chapter From Ideas to Startups tells how seven Mumbai homemakers started Lijjat Papad in 1959 with just Rs 80. By 2023 the cooperative had grown to more than 45,000 members and a turnover of Rs 1,600 crore. The same chapter follows Mohan Singh Oberoi’s path from hotel desk clerk to hotelier and looks at the trading networks of the Chettiar community. These examples sit inside the larger frame of Viksit Bharat 2047 and Atmanirbhar Bharat. A quote from Swami Vivekananda opens the discussion of India’s more than 120 unicorns in e-commerce, fintech, healthcare and agritech. Business is shown as a force that creates jobs, pays taxes, drives innovation and improves daily life. Teachers will find the material ready for discussion and classroom activities. Students are asked to look at household budgets, explore how tax returns work and even sketch simple business plans. Parents will notice that conversations about money and career choices can now start earlier and with better grounding. The change reflects a clear direction in school education. Social Science is no longer only about memorising events or definitions. It aims to give young people tools they can use as citizens and future earners. The new textbook does this by staying close to Indian experience while pointing toward the country’s long-term development goals.
