Delhi Government Transfers ₹1,370 to MCD Students for School Uniforms and Bags

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday confirmed that ₹1,370 has been credited directly into the bank accounts of students studying in Municipal Corporation of Delhi schools. The amount is meant to help families buy uniforms, school bags and other basic supplies for the academic year.

Speaking at a programme held at an MCD primary school in Tagore Garden, Gupta said the money was transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer so that every eligible child receives the support without delays or middlemen. According to the announcement, the total amount released stands at around ₹70.69 crore and covers approximately 5.25 lakh students. Of this, ₹1,250 is earmarked for uniforms and ₹120 for school bags.

Gupta congratulated the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for its continuing work in school education and noted that the government and the civic body are working together to strengthen facilities in these schools. She also spoke about newer efforts to bring science and technology closer to children. One such step is the ‘Science on Wheels’ initiative, a mobile van fitted with 60 laptops that will visit different schools and offer hands-on learning opportunities.

Alongside the cash support, the programme included the distribution of 1,500 computer printers to MCD schools and the launch of additional learning facilities such as AI and robotics labs. Officials also announced plans to develop 24 primary schools as Nigam Shri Schools, following the model of existing excellence-focused school programmes.

For many parents who send their children to MCD schools, the direct transfer reduces the immediate pressure of arranging uniforms and bags at the start of the term. Teachers and school staff often see attendance and readiness improve when basic items are available without financial strain on families. The emphasis on transparent bank transfers also addresses long-standing concerns about leakage in earlier distribution systems.

The announcement forms part of the broader Seva Sankalp Abhiyan and reflects the current Delhi government’s stated focus on improving municipal school infrastructure and learning resources. Gupta underlined that every child in the city should have access to better facilities and opportunities for growth.

The ceremony was attended by senior MCD officials including Mayor Pravesh Wahi and other local representatives. Students and parents present at the Tagore Garden school witnessed the formal launch of the support measures.
