What happens if I fail in one subject in the first semester?

Hi everyone,
I’m a first-year student and I’m worried about what happens if I fail in one subject in the first semester.

Will I have to repeat the entire semester, or can I clear the subject through a supplementary/back paper? Also, will one backlog affect my promotion to the next semester or future placements?

If anyone has gone through this, please share your experience.
