Is JEE required for private engineering colleges?

I’m planning to take admission in a private engineering college for B.Tech, but I’m confused about whether JEE Main is compulsory.
Can I get admission to a private college without appearing for JEE? Also, do all private colleges accept direct admission, or does it depend on the college and state?
