Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship 2026: What Students Should Know

The Central Sector Scheme of Scholarship (CSSS) is a government program designed to help talented students continue their college education. It is run by the Ministry of Education and mainly targets students who performed well in their Class 12 board exams but come from families with limited financial resources.

Every year, thousands of scholarships are distributed across different states and education boards in India. The idea is simple: if a student has strong academic performance but struggles financially, the scholarship helps cover part of their higher education expenses.

Under this scheme, the government provides financial support directly to students’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT).

Scholarship Amount Under CSSS

The scholarship amount depends on the stage of study. Students receive different amounts during undergraduate and later years.

Course Level Scholarship Amount
Undergraduate (1st–3rd Year) ₹12,000 per year
4th & 5th Year / Postgraduate ₹20,000 per year

This amount helps students manage basic academic expenses like books, hostel costs, or daily living expenses while studying in college.

Eligibility Criteria for Central Sector Scholarship 2026

Not every student can apply for the scheme. The government selects candidates based on both academic merit and financial need.

  • Must be among the top 20 percentile in Class 12 board results.
  • Must be pursuing a regular undergraduate course in a recognized college or university.
  • The annual family income should not exceed ₹4.5 lakh.
  • Students should not receive any other major government scholarship.
  • The applicant must be an Indian citizen.

The scheme typically selects around 82,000 students each year, with scholarships distributed equally between boys and girls.
